Saturday 30th May

Our journey home took us to Sweetheart Abbey where I was quite surprised to see much of the abbey still standing - a ruin yes,  but there was much more than I had expected there to be.  It was founded in 1273 by Lady Devorgilla of Galloway who is buried there with her husband's embalmed heart, hence the naming of the Abbey by the monks.  The stone is a very nice warm red colour.  The weather was very nice today as it had been last Saturday when we were trravelling all day. Typical!

Our next stop was the medieval stronghold of Caerlaverock Castle which was rather enjoyable as it is triangular in plan, and also has a moat - a very interesting castle, this one.  Also, there was a short little walk to the original site of the castle - it was rebuilt be ause the first one turned out to be too damp and cold.

Moving on, we stopped off at Wensleydale Creamery where we had lunch (we both had a very nice slice of quiche) and bought some cheese before heading on home.
